STEM 101 will take place Tuesday, Oct 8 2024.
Welcome:
STEM 101 is a night to help parents understand how we use DeltaMath, PowerSchool, Canvas, and Standards-Based Grading to help our students become leaders who are self-sufficient learners.
STEM 101 comprises several hands-on tasks to help you understand your student's grades and their learning environment here at the STEM School. This night is intended to be a guided night, but families can also follow along or review STEM 101 online below at their own pace at any time.

TASK ONE: Math Homework: Using Delta Math
Task:
-Log in to
Deltamath.com with your student.
-Find the Parent Demo HW Assignment.
-Complete Parent Demo HW with your student.
-Use the blue "Show Example" button at the top of the page to help solve a problem. To return to problem click the blue "Original Problem" button.
-Use the "Watch help video" to view direct instruction.

TASK TWO: Math Homework: Teacher View
Task: Watch Video
Add a checkmark to your worksheet when you hear the following teacher remarks.
-A teacher can see a students number of correct or wrong answers.
-A teacher can see if a student watched a video.
-A teacher can see how long a student spends on a question.
-A teacher uses the data dashboard to inform their teaching to work with a student.

TASK THREE: Create a Canvas Parent Portal
The STEM School uses Canvas as the online learning interface with students. Watch the video below to get an idea of why we chose to adopt this learning platform.

Task:
1. Go to Canvas Webpage: Use a personal computer, not your student's device. If you need to skip this step and come back that is okay.

2. Click "Parent of a Canvas User? Click Here for an Account" located in the top right-hand corner of the screen next to the Hamilton County Schools Logo.
3. Enter your name in the
Your Name field.
4. Enter your email in the
Your Email field.
5. Enter your password in the
Password field.
6. Re-enter your password in the
Re-enter Password field.
7. Enter a pairing code in the
Student Pairing Code field.
Open "student" user settings
In Global Navigation, click the Account link [1], then click the Settings link [2].
Pair with Observer
Click the Pair with Observer button.
Note: If the Pair with Observer button doesn't display in your User Settings, please contact your institution for assistance with pairing with an observer.
Copy Pairing Code
Copy the six-digit alphanumeric pairing code [1]. You will need to share the code with the observer who will link to your account. The pairing code will expire after seven days or its first use.
To close the window, click the OK button [2].
Note: Pairing codes are case sensitive.
8. Agree to the terms of use by clicking the You agree to the terms of use checkbox.
9. Click the Start Participating button.

TASK FOUR: In Canvas, finding practice assignments and assignments that will be graded
Log into Canvas with your parent account.

Task: Together with your student, locate the following items in Canvas by logging into your student's classroom.
- Dashboard- location of all classes assigned to your student.
- Modules- units of students listed in a class.
- Grades- list of all practice assignments and graded LT assignments.
- A practice assignment- assignments not in all caps.
- An LT graded assignment- assignments in ALL CAPS.

TASK FIVE: Understanding Grades

Task: Review your student's current grades in PowerSchool by:
- Logging into PowerSchool. https://powerschool.hcde.org/
- Click the grade number in the Y1 column.
- Note each class ALL CAPS graded LT's.
- Graded LT's include a date.
- Locate an LT that has been graded.

Chromebook Safety

All Chromebook issues need to be reported to by students to their House teacher or Mrs. Taylor. House teachers or Mrs. Taylor will work with IT on getting Chromebooks fixed and replaced.
