Rising 9th grade STEM School students and families,
Welcome to STEM School Chattanooga! I wanted to share some information about Summer Reading in preparation for starting 9th grade at STEM in the fall. My summer reading goals for you are two-fold: guiding you towards a personal love of reading and easing your transition to high school and the STEM School itself. With these goals in mind, I am asking you to read 2 books this summer:
1) The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens - Sean Covey
-We will begin the year with a book study of the 7 Habits, focusing on skills and behaviors that will help students be successful at STEM School and beyond.
-This book discusses various issues that teens might encounter in high school and college, focusing on good choices and habits for success.
2) Student Choice - Fiction/Literary Nonfiction Novel
You may choose a Fiction/Literary Nonfiction novel of your choice:
Books must be school appropriate - families can help with this decision and/or use a website like Common Sense Media for assistance.
Choose a book at an appropriate yet challenging reading level for you.
Books may include novels, plays, or graphic novels.
We plan to study To Kill a Mockingbird, I, Robot, and Romeo and Juliet during the year, so please omit these from your independent choice.
Students will share their summer reading with their classmates during the first few weeks of school. If you need book ideas, access to books, or to search the reading level of a book, I have provided some helpful websites below:
Chattanooga Public Library Summer Reading Picks

Archive.Org Online Free Digital ebook Library
Project Gutenberg Online Free Digital ebook Library
The Chattanooga Public Library is a great place to find fiction books to read over the summer, and McKay's and other used book/thrift stores have low prices on books if you prefer to have your own print copy. Please contact the STEM School at 423-531-6270 or Ms. Amy in the front office at [email protected] if your student needs to borrow a print copy of 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens - books would need to be requested and picked up from the STEM School front office no later than Thursday, May 25. Happy summer reading, and I look forward to seeing you in August!
