This micro-credential denotes a student who has become proficient in soldering for digital fabrication.

Instructions: To earn a micro-credential, take pictures or video of each criterion to show as evidence of your mastery.  When sending in your evidence be sure to organize your evidence and add captions or descriptors to explain what is happening.  Please do not send in multiple jpegs without organizing them in Slides, Docs, etc. 


  • Part 1: Solder two wires together.
    • Show how the wires were tinned before soldering.  
    • Show the soldered wires.
    • Show the final product with heat shrink protecting the soldering joint.
  • Part 2: Solder a circuit to perf board.
    • Solder two wires, an LED bulb, and a 100-330 OHM resistor to the perf board.
    • Create a trace connecting the components of the circuit. A trace is a connection between two points on the perf board.  Using the legs of the resistor or LEDs, jumper wire, or a piece of wire are the best methods to make a trace.  While you can try to draw a line with solder, this usually ends up being a huge mess and not working well.
    • Place a battery (3V to 9V) between the 2 wires to light the LED. Be sure to check the polarity if it does not light.
