Summer Reading Rising 9th Grade

Incoming 9th grade STEM School students and families,

As the current school year comes to a close, I wanted to share the information about Summer
Reading in preparation for starting your 9th grade year in the fall. Since this first year is
focused on the transition to high school and the STEM School itself, I want the students to
use the summer to get a “head start” on their independent reading for the year. I am asking
that students read 2 books this summer:

1. 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens - Sean Covey

➢ We begin the year with a book study of the 7 Habits, focusing on skills and
behaviors that will help students be successful at the STEM School and beyond.

2. Student Choice - Fiction Novel

➢ Since we begin the year reviewing the Elements of Fiction, students may choose

a Fiction novel for their second book. Here are the guidelines:

✓Books must contain school-appropriate topics.
✓Books need to be at an 8th grade reading level or higher.
✓Books may include plays but NOT nonfiction - needs to be a Fiction work.
✓We will be studying To Kill a Mockingbird, I, Robot, and Romeo and Juliet
during the year, so please omit these from your independent choice.
(You may pre-read them for the year if you want!)

The first independent reading book will be assessed during the first unit, and students will
need to submit the title and author during the first week of school. If you need book ideas or to
search the reading level of a book, I have provided some helpful websites below: - (8th Grade is 800L and above) - (Online free digital ebook library)
Apps: FreeBooks, Kindle and iBooks - (search for free books)

McKay and other local used book stores have low prices on books if you prefer to have your
own print copy.

Have a great summer and happy reading!
