Summer Reading Rising 9th Grade

SUMMER READING

Rising 9th grade STEM School students and families,

Welcome to STEM School Chattanooga! I wanted to share the information about Summer Reading in preparation for starting 9th grade at STEM in the fall. My summer reading goals for you are two-fold: cultivating a culture of literacy and love of reading, and easing the transition to high school and the STEM School itself. With these goals in mind, I am asking you to read 2 books this summer:

  1. 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens - Sean Covey
    1. We will begin the year with a book study of the 7 Habits, focusing on skills and behaviors that will help students be successful at STEM School and beyond.
    2. This book discusses various issues that teens might encounter in high school and college, focusing on good choices and habits for success. http://www.seancovey.com/parents_upsguide.html

  2. Student Choice - Fiction Novel

You may choose a Fiction novel of your choice for your second book:

    1. Books must be school appropriate - families can help with this decision.
    2. Choose a book at an appropriate yet challenging reading level for you.
    3. Books may include novels, plays, or graphic novels.
    4. We plan to study To Kill a Mockingbird, I, Robot, and Romeo and Juliet during the year, so please omit these from your independent choice.   (You may pre-read them for the year if you want!)

Students will submit the title and author of their independent fiction book the first week of school and prepare to share it with their classmates. If you need book ideas or to search the reading level of a book, I have provided some helpful websites below:

https://hub.lexile.com/ - Book Levels and “Find A Book” Search Engine (9th: 1180-1495L)

https://www.gutenberg.org/ and https://archive.org/  - Online free digital ebook libraries

The Chattanooga Public Library is a great place to find fiction books to read over the summer, and McKay's and other used book stores have low prices on books if you prefer to have your own print copy. Please contact the office or Mrs. Bolus at bolus_lisa@hcde.org if your student needs to borrow a print copy of 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens this summer.

Have a great summer and happy reading!
